Welcome to Nicholas County!

Historic Marker - County Name's Sake - George Nicholas, 1743-99, born in Virginia. Colonel, Revolutionary War. Zealous advocate of Virginia adoption of Federal Constitution, 1788. He came to Kentucky, 1790. 'Brightest luminary' in Kentucky first constitutional convention. First Attorney General of State. First Transylvania law professor. Extensive landholder. Invested in cloth manufature, iron furnace.Nicholas County is located on the northeastern edge of the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky and is an easy two-hour drive from Louisville or Cincinnati.

It was formed in 1799 and named for Colonel George Nicholas, a Revolutionary War veteran from Fayette County.

The elevation in the County ranges from 565 to 1060 feet above sea level.  In 2000 the county population was 6,813 in a land area of 196.61 square miles, an average of 34.7 people per square mile. The county seat is Carlisle.

The general region is noted for its scenic beauty, history, horse farms and hospitality.  Nicholas County has a picturesque, rural character.  Its rolling countryside is typical of the Bluegrass belt where winding roads lead past manicured farms, through wooded glades and small villages.
